WEEK 2
Essential Question: What is the connection between biological sex and gender?
Students will learn the inherent difference between biological sex and gender expression. This exploration will be rooted in scientific inquiry of chromosones as well as sociological theory of gender as performance. Points of interest include: chromosomes, intersex, positionality, transgender, non-binary, cisgender , Two-Spirit, gender queer, performativity.
OBJECTIVES:
Students will understand the scientific concepts behind sex and gender
Students will understand the following terms: chromosones, intersex, male, female, biological sex, asexual, bisexual
Students will understand privilege
Students will explore sociological concepts like positionality and performativity that will help them to situate their understanding of gender
Students will understand allyship

Provoke and Hook the students with the YouTube video: "What It's Like To Be Intersex" (4min)
For the scientific aspect, supplement your own lesson with this documentary "Sex Determination: More Complicated Than You Thought"
View the Discovery Channel documentary "Is it a Boy or a Girl?"

Schedule a guest speaker from the Centre for Sexuality WiseGuyz program or your local equivalent

Model an identity map for the students
Following the teacher's example, the students will then map their own identities
Discuss as a group how identity is formed using maps as the basis
Privilege Walk activity (see example here)

Following the privilege activity, students will consider how their society 'sees' their gender
Students will watch Jean Kilbourne's TedTalk on gender and bodies in advertising
Students will compile examples they see into their Digital Journal
​
Continue the Digital Journal reflections and perform continuous check-ins with students
Utilize exit-slips particularly at the end of sensitive classes (for example, the Privilege Walk)
